I think that if Venice is a Picturesque Place for Masked Celebrations, it is really a place for the crossing of Charon --- crossing from Life to Death. What does this celebration represent? Charon boats down the river with the closing of time. Time shall no longer flow. Time instead arrives. Time used to fill up the emptiness. Now the waters fill up the emptiness. The picture of Time is a man unaware of the boat. He rides his horse. The picture of Space is man aware that he is floating.
